As I say in the video, easy to brush this off but really it was a huge error. I’m trying to highlight this for everyone to learn from and also for myself in order to maintain a high level of vigilance as the years wear on.
Something so small can end up putting the lives of the crew in danger. Well it did, I guess. Anyway watch the vid and let me know what you think.
    Cheers, Riley.

@Craig Dawson that’s why you should never shame children because not taking responsibility is one of the many negative outcomes.

    • soilgrasswaterair
      soilgrasswaterair Hace 5 meses +1

I think it has lots to do with what people are taught growing up. If they were shamed and/or berated when they did mistakes during their upbringing then it will be tougher to own up and take responsibility for those mistakes. If you are told about your mistakes and that you need to be more present, but it’s explained in a gentle way then it’s easier to take responsibility. So many parents react with guilting and shaming their children in hopes of them doing better, but nothing good comes out of that they will only learn how to lie, hide what happened, get scared, feel shame, make excuses and run from the responsibility. I’m studying development psychology and attachment etc at uni. at the moment and many will dismiss things by saying “but it’s ok to say those things to children as long as you apologize”, but it’s really not ok to dial it up emotionally in a negative way because children internalize their parent/parents words and the reactions to those words will go into how the child’s way of coping with things since it’s their formative years (many will eventually have to re-learn new coping mechanisms in their teens or in adulthood, and that’s tough to do, but necessary due to its negative effect on their intimate/social relationships in general).
Owning up to your mistakes in a level headed way is impressive considering how much goes into it!

Coming from a world of aviation, being a helicopter pilot, the growing risk you get with more experience over time is complacency. We refer to it as "maintaining a state of hyper-vigilance" while operating an aircraft, because the margins for error can get squeaky thin and the forgiveness of any mistakes in the sky is always 0. Life will find moments to throw at you, to help you check your level of complacency and those experiences are a chance to pivot in one of 2 directions: Denial and eventual death OR acceptance, vulnerability, internalization and constructive re-evaluation to get back into a state of effective hyper-vigilance. Because you never know if your mental state is working until it suddenly isn't. Sharing with the world the mistakes and errors we all make as humans, helps yourself and all of us conduct ourselves better. The FAA has a site where any pilot can go and describe the mistakes they made and it absolves them of almost all consequence (usually things that just remove your pilot cert) because the world of aviation knows that sharing the mistakes is how we avoid repeating them and growing better as an institution. I thank you sir, for your vulnerability and determination to remain vigilant.

    • Rob Ellis
      Rob Ellis Hace 4 meses

How do you create a set of mental habits that will enable vigilance? I know for myself that while I drive safely while holding a conversation, I often can't navigate while speaking. Obviously, sailing is a somewhat different matter because the rate of decision making will hopefully be lower than while driving, but the weather is constantly changing and there are always items to be managed, trimmed, monitored, etc.

The world doesn’t need more washing machines. 😅
There are so many out there only running one or two hours per week and sit idle for the rest of the time.
I for myself wouldn’t expect the host to wash my laundry.
Furthermore, a washing machine is heavy, uses energy, water and takes up space. All of which are precious and limited on a boat.

Hi Riley, I can relate to the stress being responsible for the safety of the people onboard and the boat. I once hit a rock in my home waters which I was supposed to know so well. It was a horrible feeling although nobody got hurt and the boat just needed minor repairs. The feeling tho still gets me and I was so angry with myself as I was too sure about my knowledge of where I was. It did get better with time and a near miss like in your case is perhaps a good reminder of the risks. Good job analysing it!

@Pam Sheppard airline pilots make mistakes all the time - that's why there's systems in place to minimise the consequcneces - ATC, copilot, clear division of roles, TCAS, no-fault incident reporting. The point is to minimise the consequences of mistakes and learn from them.

    • Maaike van Oosterom
Maaike van Oosterom Hace 5 meses +5

@johnnytheprick Laughter and trying to ridicule me to deflect attention from your own mistake does not change the fact that you were wrong about the real cause of Riley’s anger with himself and how close they came to danger. Watch the video again and see if you can find it. Hint: It’s below the water.

    • johnnythepr1ck

@Pam Sheppard eye 100% agree and disagree. ive made mistakes, done things i regret and will to the day i die ( id imagine). im sure riley feels the same. he appears honest and looks good on camera.
but, like you, riley, as the captain, was/is responsible for the lives on the vessel. hes actions are inexcusable. caught up in the moment? absolutely. error in judgement? we all agree.
look yourself in the mirror and honestly tell me (via an uploadto youtube) that you dont have at least one regret in your life.
      how old are you?

    • Pam Sheppard
Pam Sheppard Hace 5 meses +4

I disagree (And so does Riley whuxh is why. He understands the consequences of his inattention and is lucky it didn’t end in disaster). He’s the captain - an error like that one is criminal. His role is exactly the same as an airplane pilot’s. Not sure you’d tell an airplane pilot to not worry.

Thank you so much for going public with this episode. After 11 years cruising USA East Coast and the Bahamas, this year coming into a dock with friends aboard and a group trying to raise a sunken dingy on the end of the dock, I lost concentration and came in way way too fast and at the wrong angle. I hit the dock hard enough to put an ugly gouge in our newly painted topsides to and jostle those aboard. I was gutted by how negligent I was. I am now hyper-vigilant to times when I am distracted from that paramount duty of safety, seamanship, and good boat handling. Thanks again for reminding all of us of the importance of diligence -- especially when having fun with family and friends.

Every time I watch your vlogs I am just awestruck by your lives on the ocean. It’s so beautiful, even during a storm. I also love that people recognize your boat because they’ve watched you and your family and various crews on so many adventures. I wish I could meet all of you in person some day, but I think it’s a bit late for me, so I’ll just keep enjoying you here! ❤️

Riley, great session about the reef. When I was 33 and over 3,000 hours in airplanes II could no longer claim flying was my top 3 passions or focus in life. I quit. Now I’m enjoying my O45 N64. Great truth.

Accountability. Just like driving a car, being a pilot, operating anything. Sometimes we let our guard down. Great job Riley and glad everyone is safe :-)

Riley, hang in there man. We learn from close calls, just like we learn from sweet moments. You are a better man now, and fortunately you got to learn a hard lesson, without a tragedy. Be grateful for that, learn well from it, and move on with life. Next, Id like to give BIG shout out to Jack and Fran from Back 2 Basics. Ive been following those guys for quite a while, and really enjoy their ESclips channel. I often watched their channel, hoping that they could somehow meet Riley and Elayna. And it happened! I hope all of my fellow La Vagabonde watchers check out Jack and Frans ESclips channel. When you do, you will see why this collaboration is a perfect fit. Cheers to Jack and Fran, and of course to the La Vagabonde Captain, the beautiful Princess Elayna, the kids, and the crew! Gonna miss you Sarah. Wishing the best that life has to offer, to you Sarah!

as a new nurse i highly relate to the feeling of making a mistake, however "small", and wanting to remember that feeling, being vocal about it, to prevent it from happening again. will miss sweet Sarah

    Great Episode,
I suspect that you spotting that rock in time was not entirely luck, your subconscious was tracking the time between obstacle scans. That said, I’m glad you’re got it that shit like that can never happen, not even once.

Totally get the sick feeling Riley, it is ok to feel this way and will make you a better sailor for it. I fell overboard in the middle of the Indian Ocean once through complacency/stupidity, scared the shite out of me and the "what ifs" that followed haunted me for ages. Love you guys and admire your diligence with safety at sea. Keep the awesome adventures flowing, you're true inspirations to many! Cheers, from a fellow West Aussie. Kim xo
