Long-time watcher. First-time Commenter. After watching that lightning storm, I was thinking how I wouldn't mind watching a few hours of lightning on La Vagabond. Maybe You guys should make like hour long La Vagabonde ambiance videos, things like lightning storms, rain storms, fair winds and following seas. Something to have on in the background while working, or just chilling. With some chill music.
Anyways, it's not like you guys are busy making videos, sailing, raising kids, building a boat, moving to Vietnam, running a swimsuit company, starting a charter company, you guys have tons of time to make more videos 😅😅😅.
Love what you guys are doing, keep it up. Aloha.

I think what Lenny meant when he said there'd be more space when he got back on Vagabond is that he'd again be surrounded by the big wide ocean. Such a sweet child. Keep doing such a great job of raising him. He's not even a tiny bit self-absorbed and that's almost unknown in this day and age.

    • Lorraine Chamberlain
Lorraine Chamberlain Hace 12 días +1

I thought that very thing, too. Glad you pointed it out for any landlubbers who thought he meant indoor space.💗

    • Martin Ryan
Martin Ryan Hace 14 días +3

'More space' is exactly what has humbled so many of us, like Lenny, whom have existed amongst such a vast amount of nothingness like the ocean, that it becomes clear there is so much more than nothingness. Far more than we amount to as individuals, and far greater than one.

    • Gef Ginn

So good to see some really intelligent analysis of the clouds and how they influence local wind pressure. This is getting into high level racing knowledge which I think all cruisers should aspire to know & understand. This knowledge can help you do less passage time in a much safer but more comfortable way. Good stuff Riley. I super strongly think adopting racing strategies/ideology in equipment and practice should influence and change the way cruisers cruise. For too long there has been a divide in attitude between the two disciplines of the sport/recreation. I hear people use the excuse of ‘blue water’ boats to justify heavy & significantly over engineered design in everything that honestly sail really terribly which in turn is dangerous. This low performance of the boat then snowballs the excuse people make to over engineer everything on their boat & they give up on aspiring towards anything high performance. This attitude flows into things like sail handling & sail wardrobe choice. The attitude breeds acceptance of doing so many things poorly because ‘we are just cruising anyhow’. I find it so frustrating to watch. I find it particularly frustrating to watch influential sailing ESclipsrs who ingrain this retarding attitude.

According to Google the speed of sound can change due to things like air pressure but generally it's around 1100 ft per second. Depending on wind direction thunder can normally be heard from up to 10 miles away. There are 5280 ft/mile so as a rough guide count the number of seconds from seeing the lightening to hearing the thunder and multiply it by 5 for the distance in miles.

The end with Riley walking down the dock holding a trash bag and 2 blocks of cheese had me cracking up lol. So random. Also died when he said Elayna started talking like a Ninja Turtle 🤣🤣 Lenny is so cute. I love how just go with the flow he's learned to be cuz of the life you guys have given him. Alot of children act out when they experience some kind of change. Maybe you just didn't show it. But I find it hard to believe he would. He seems like he's just cool with whatever. Such sweet little guys yall are raising 💜💚 can't wait for the next video!!

This old sonar technician remembers the Gulf Stream too well. Much warmer water makes vessels behave differently (even sound behaves differently). Fair winds and following seas, mate.

The water was such a rich blue and the weather was exciting. I love thunder and lightning, especially when it makes the massive deep rumble buildup to the big boom. I was wondering how much of the day you are able to just relax and not be cranking and yanking ropes. Elayna is looking very pretty in this video.

So weird that y’all were just a few minutes from me for several weeks! Hope you enjoyed my hometown to the fullest. You guys might as well be made honorary Lowcountry sandlappers if you have a storage unit here too. 😝

Lightening can be heard roughly 10 nautical miles away, although a lot of factors affect that.
I do a lot of offshore doublehanded yacht racing and the rule of thumb is that for every second between the flash of lightening and the sound the strike is 1/5 of a nautical mile away. e.g 10 seconds between flash to bang = 2 nautical miles.
